I have spent the last two days ruminating a retrospective or a forecast of the future, the truth is not much has changed. We still find ourselves scrapping it out trying to find solutions to problems created by the comfort we sit in and refuse to leave. We are still hunting for technological solutions to organic matters. We are still living with me first mentality rather than using our community as our mast.
It seems that for many the first day of the new year is a washing of all sins and a chance to start anew but this mentality is built for relapse, repent and all will be forgiven, so why not run off the rails, we will try harder next year.
The truth is, at this point, we may not have next year. Our ecosystem is clearly presenting opposition to our behavior, opposition that if we do not take heed to will result in cataclysmic feedback loops leaving more devastation than most are prepared to handle.
We must all look inside and think about what it is we wish our future to look like, if your future is not long in your eyes how about the future of your family, friends, offspring. We must ask what does it say about us as humans to neglect reality in favor of comfort or pleasure. What does it say about us when the decisions we make have negative affects on not just our bodies, minds, or habitats but the bodies, minds, or habitats of our family, friends, and offspring. Are you comfortable with the answer to those questions?
I ask myself these questions daily, I am no saint nor have I made all the right decisions, far from it, I often despise the answers. For that reason course corrections are a constant, this is not something that happens over night, it is intentional daily reflection that will help guide us towards homeostatic living, not for the faint of heart but absolutely necessary if we hope to carry on living a life with some semblance of sanity.
My hope is that this year proves to be the one where those with the power to make change speak louder than ever and create walls against oppression and destruction. I hope this year we wake up to the perils of continuing down the road of calories over ecology. I hope this year we place the reigns in the hands of those who tend the soil and provide sustenance for our communities allowing them to guide us as we seek homeostasis on this rock that has been so kind to let us exist here…..
